Spiritually Fruitful? Stay Connected

Would you like to be more loving, more joyful, more at peace, more patient, more kind, more good, more faithful, more gentle, more self-controlled? In other words, spiritually fruitful? Then I have the answer!

Jesus’ Last Minute Instruction

Just before Jesus went to the cross, he had some last minute instructions for his followers. One most important one was this:

Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. (John 15:4 NLT).

I long to be all of those things. They’re the “fruit of the Spirit” from Galatians 5:22-23 and they are what is produced in me when I am being spiritually fruitful. But Jesus makes it clear I cannot be spiritually fruitful apart from him. I must remain in him. I must abide in him. My relationship with him should mirror his relationship with his Father.

Being Spiritually Fruitful

I am convinced that the extent we remain in Jesus and he in us, fully determines the life we lead and the fruit it produces. Where we see are unloving, displeased, in conflict, unkind, spiritually deficient, unfaithful, abrasive and out of control, they are signs that we are unattached to Jesus in some way. In some ways, holiness, or the pursuit of spiritual maturity is asking God to graft us better on to his Son, the Vine. It is the most important thing we can do. It is the lifeblood of our life in Jesus.

God wants you to be connected to him. He longs to be in relationship with you, in union with you. If you don’t know him, then get to know him. If you know him already, then stay connected!

What “fruit” do you see growing in your life? Are there any that seem to be withering on the vine? If so, how are you going to get them growing again? Why not comment below.
