Fighting for a Great Family Life
In this sermon about family life, we are reminded that a great family chooses to serve God together.
Do You Long for the Family Life of Yesteryear?
We long for the security of a good family life. Those of us who live in families work hard to live this way. Those of us who no longer live in a family try to remember what our families taught us and try to live that way too.
Placing all of our trust and security in our family life can have its problems. We can end up idolising it, making it into a god.
Joshua encourages us to fight to live in our families in the right way:
Joshua 24:1-15, p.240
An Account of God’s Covenant with God’s Family
The story Joshua tells is one of conquest, it’s a testimony of faith, and an account of God’s covenant with his family.
Joshua Calls God’s Family to Abandon Ancestral Gods and Serve Yahweh
15But if it does not please you to worship the Lord, choose here and now whom you will worship: the gods whom your forefathers worshipped beside the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. But I and my family, we will worship the Lord.
Like an unhealthy hankering after the security of past family life, the ancestral gods of the Israelites seemed to provide many of the same benefits: a place to live, guaranteed security and abundance, safety and prosperity.
God promises both prosperity and suffering, but promises to travel with them in both. He desires a new life for them if they will remain loyal, faithful.
Joshua makes the covenant with Yahweh. “I and my family, we will worship the Lord”.
Renew Your Family’s Covenant with God
Do you need to make that choice today? Do you need to say, for the first time, “I and my family, we will worship the Lord”?
Sometimes, we need to be reminded of the loyalty and faithfulness God asks of us. We need to be reminded of the strong hold our ancestral gods can have over us. We need to be reminded of the covenant promises we made to God.
Choose to serve only Him today
Will you choose to serve God today? In your household, whether a household of one or of many, will you choose to promote godly values such as generosity, hospitality, service, giving to those in need, dedication, prayer? That sounds like a great family life to me!
