In this sermon on the importance of small groups, we are challenged to ensure we are in a community that engages our heads, our hearts and our hands.
What does “Fellowship” Mean?
When it comes to fellowship, size matters. We can worship in a crowd, but we can’t truly fellowship. Fellowship happens best in a group of about 10-12 people. And those groups should engage our heads, our hands, and our hearts. When they do, we ensure the wheels are round and that the corps grows all by itself.
Colossians 3:12-17, p.1184
Fellowship Includes Your Head
Let the message of Christ dwell among you in all its richness. Instruct and admonish each other with the utmost wisdom. Sing thankfully in your hearts to God,with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.Colossians 3:16 NEB
The Bible should be at the centre of all our small groups.
Fellowship Includes Your Heart
Music has an important part to play in teaching us, enabling us to praise God and thank him for his goodness. Our hearts are also changed as we experience transparency and honesty from each other. Small groups should include space for deep fellowship.
Fellowship Includes Your Hands
Whatever you are doing, whether you speak or act, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.Colossians 3:17 NEB
Every small group should use their hands in ministry and service.
Be a Part of the Deeper Community
Research shows The Salvation Army doesn’t score highly in providing communities of the whole. Our small groups tend to be “hands on”.But if we want growth all by itself then we need to be a community of the whole. So ensure you join one. You need a small group to grow, to be corrected, and to help you serve others.
