Have you ever held a conversation where your Mum or Dad or another authority figure wasn’t listening? Do you ever feel like that when talking to God? Often, God will willingly give to us.

Does God Listen?
Does God really and truly hear our personal prayers? And care enough to respond? What if God is silent? What if God doesn’t seem to be answering our prayers? What if it seems he’s not listening? We can get frustrated if it seems like God is silent.
God Heard Hannah’s Request
Hannah had come to worship God in the holy place and pleaded with him to give her a child. A prayer she had prayed so many times over so many years. So much so, it appears she was ashamed to even voice her prayer anymore. In a religion where silent, personal prayer was uncommon, she no longer prayed her heartfelt prayer of anguish out loud. So troubled was she the priest thought she was drunk. But God heard her request. He seemed silent. It seemed as though he wasn’t listening. But he was listening. Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a boy, Samuel, whose name means “heard by God”.
Go! Stop! Wait!
Sometimes God does give us what we want. Hannah desperately wanted a child, and God answered her prayer. Like a good father or mother, God loves to bless us and give us things that will please us. All of us have at least one thing in our lives that God has given us and that really blesses us.
But sometimes, what we are asking for is not good for us and God knows that. He says Stop and No! We may not want to hear that. We think we know best. But sometimes, God knows that what we want isn’t for the best.
Hannah’s experience for a long while was this: Sometimes, what we ask for is a good thing for us, but now is not the right time for God to give it to us. We have to wait a bit. The story suggests it was a whole year before Hannah fell pregnant.
Thanking God for Answered Prayers
God eventually gave Hannah a son, and she gratefully received him. But she had made a promise to give her son back to God. At about three years old, she took Samuel to the temple, along with a lavish gift of not one bull for sacrifice, but three bulls, and she gives her son back to God to live and work in the temple.
God gives to us. If you are blessed with children, then they are one way in which we see his generosity. That it what we celebrate today. If you are a parent, you can thank God for your children today. You can also ask God to be generous to your children.
You can also give to God. You don’t necessarily have to leave your children in the care of someone else, like Hannah! But you can show your gratitude to God in other ways. The kind of gifts God loves to receive from us are costly. They require great sacrifice, like Hannah’s sacrifice.
Does what you give to God cost you anything?
