Is leadership talent or skill important? Organisations seem to spend a good deal of time and energy in developing leadership talent or skill. But what about character for leadership? What role does that play?
Leadership Talent or Skill
Leadership talent or skill is important. But here are three things I try to do every day that require no leadership talent or skill at all:
Showing up requires no leadership talent or skill. But it is essential. You cannot make a difference if you are not there! Leadership requires presence. It needs your participation. So be present in your organisation or team. Spend time around your team members.
Show You Care
No leadership talent or skill is required to show those around you that you care for them. Sometimes all it needs is to show some common decency, which, let’s face it, often seems in short supply these days. You don’t have to be rude. You can choose not to be arrogant. You don’t have to dismiss people’s ideas or opinions. You can decide not to look down your nose at people. Just show them you care instead.
It takes zero leadership talent or skill to be negative. Whining and complaining take no talent or skill at all. But it’s just as true to say that having a positive attitude takes no leadership talent or skill either. I can almost guarantee that the leaders who have had the most impact on you have been those who smile, those who make an effort to engage with you, those who are overwhelmingly positive, even in difficult circumstances and those who work with a high energy level. Be that leader! Choose to have a positive mindset.
Character for Leadership
These three strengths require no leadership talent or skill, but they do show you have the character for leadership. All you have to do for them to show up in your leadership is to desire to do them, and to reflect on yourself often enough to ensure they are still there. There are many other characteristics that require no leadership talent or skill, but are present in character for leadership. What are some of those characteristics you have seen?
