Choose Joy, not Resentment

Are you full of resentment towards someone? It’s almost inevitable that someone has hurt you during your life. But holding on to your anger towards that person eventually leads to resentment.

Resentment Destroys

Resentment is the great relationship destroyer.
Paul says:
[Love] … keeps no record of wrongs. (1 Corinthians 13:5b NIVUK]
The transforming power of God can help you let go of your hurt and resentment. He can help you forgive the person involved. He can help you choose joy.

Focusing on the Good Things

The transforming power of God can help you focus on the good things in your life. God’s Word can fill your mind with positive and joyful things. Things that are true, right and admirable (Philippians 4:8). He can help you invest your life in others. It’s amazing how serving other people can get our focus of the aches and pains we have in our own lives. The more unselfish you become, the more joyful you will be.
If you allow the transforming power of God into your life, you can choose to be joyful no matter how much people hurt you, because you know that ultimately God is in control.
Will you pray this prayer of Thomas Merton with me?
Oh God, we are one with You. You have made us one with You. You have taught us that if we are open to one another, You dwell in us. Help us to preserve this openness and to fight for it with all our hearts. Help us to realise that there can be no understanding where there is mutual rejection. Oh God, in accepting one another wholeheartedly, fully, completely, we accept You, and we thank You, and we adore You, and we love You with our whole being, because our being is in Your being, our spirit is rooted in Your spirit. Fill us then with love, and let us be bound together with love as we go our diverse ways, united in this one spirit which makes You present in the world, and which makes You witness to the ultimate reality that is love. Love has overcome. Love is victorious. Amen.
