Building Leadership Character

Character is the bedrock of your leadership. Who you are is more important than what you do. So how do you build good character?

From Teaching to Training

Last week I published the post, 4 Ways Character is the Most Important Aspect of Leadership. One of my readers rightly picked me up on the fact the post told you what was needed but didn’t tell you how to get what you needed. He was right, and so hopefully, this post redresses the balance!

Making the Right Choice

Perhaps the best way to build leadership character is to make the right choice when we are tempted to do the opposite. In terms of Christian leadership, we could start with the list of Christlike characteristics that Paul lists in Galatians 5:

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Galatians 5:22-23 (New Living Translation)

Here, it’s easy to see how this works. There are times when I am tempted to be unloving, both in leadership and elsewhere. Perhaps I’m disappointed with a colleague. I can choose to encourage rather than to criticise. Maybe I am tired and worn out. It’s easy to get to a place where nothing makes me happy. But I can choose to be grateful for some aspect of my leadership role, which would bring joy to my life and to others.

One of the sure-fire ways that God builds leadership character in us is by allowing all sorts of difficult and trying circumstances which helps to build our resilience: difficulties, temptations, conflicts, boredom and so on. It gives us the opportunity to choose to react in a godly way.

Relying on the Holy Spirit

Of course, sometimes the situation is such that we feel there is no way we can make that choice, or perhaps our natural reaction means there’s no time to recognise a situation as one where we can choose to build our leadership character and by the time we do so, it’s too late; we’ve reacted badly. But God doesn’t expect us to do all this in our own strength. When it comes to building leadership character, as in so many other things in our lives, it’s about leaning into the power of the Holy Spirit.

It is the Holy Spirit who allows us to make the right choices that help build our leadership character. He will produce the character we need.

What choices could you make this week to build your leadership character and ensure you are a leader with long-term influence, with a team who trust you and who is an example to follow?
